GETTING THE HANG OF IT (High Beginner English)

What are ‘Pet Names’? These are the names for a friend, lover, or child and not your pets. Maybe you heard them already, but if you have not, then you could learn something new today!

Many cultures use “pet names” to show their love to someone. They’re maybe friends or more. In North American English-speaking countries, Canada and the U.S, some of the words that are currently used the most are:

Baby, Babe, Bae, Boo, Hun, Honey, Love, Precious, Princess, Sweetie, Cupcake, Muffin

This list does not have all the words, but it has some of the main words. Who do you use these words with? Different people use different pet names. We will put them into three categories:

Were you right? Many people use different words. It depends on the person and how comfortable they feel. I do not use every word and/or the same way. But, I have used them or heard them in this way.

Are these okay for men or women? It also depends on the person. From my experience, women use most of these pet names for women. But, what do men call their male friends and/or boys? These words are common:

Bro (Friend) - Bruh (Friend) - Homie (Friend) - Dude (Friend) - Champ (Child) - Buddy (Friend / Child) - Bud (Friend / Child) - Chief (Child)

Maybe you know these words and maybe you don’t know these words. This list can give you an idea. Do people in your country use pet names? Do you? What’s your favourite pet name?

HALFWAY THERE (Intermediate English)

Do you know what ‘Pet Names’ are? It may not be what you think! These are the names you give a person close to you and not your pets. You may have heard them already, but if you have not, then you could be learning something new today!

Various cultures use these “pet names” to tell someone that they feel close to them. They can be friends or more. In North American English-speaking countries, Canada and the U.S, some of the words that are currently used the most are:

Baby, Babe, Bae, Boo, Hun, Honey, Love, Precious, Princess, Sweetie, Cupcake, Muffin

Of course, this short list does not contain all the words that are used, but it does have some of the main ones. Can you tell who the words above could be used for? Pet names vary per person; It depends on the people using them and the people receiving them. So, we will separate these into three categories:

Lover               Child               Friend

Some of the words could be used for both your lover and your child. It all depends on the person. Give it a try before reading below!

How did you do? The way I describe the use of them above varies from person to person. As mentioned before, it really does depend on the person and how comfortable they feel using certain words. I do not use every word listed above and/or in the use described. However, I have personally either used them or heard them being used as described above.

You may also wonder if these can be used for every gender. Again, that also depends on the person. However, to be general and based on what I hear, most of these pet names are used by women or towards women. But, what do men call their male friends and/or boys? The following terms are often used:

Bro (Friend) - Bruh (Friend) - Homie (Friend) - Dude (Friend) - Champ (Child) - Buddy (Friend / Child) - Bud (Friend / Child) - Chief (Child)

Maybe you heard different words or different uses, but these can give you an idea of what people call each other in North American English-speaking countries. Do people in your country use pet names? Do you? What’s your favourite one?

NATURAL (Advanced English)

Do you know what the term ‘Pet Name’ refers to? Opposite to what you might think, the name that you give your pets is not the idea this wants to convey. As a matter of fact, it is a term of endearment that is given to a person by someone close to them. You may have heard them already, but if you have not, then you could be learning something new today!

Various cultures use these “pet names” to let someone know that they feel close to them. Be it as friends or more. In North American English-speaking countries, some of the words that are currently used the most are:

Pet names vary per person; It depends on both the people using them and who is receiving them. Having said that, we will divide these into three distinct categories:

Lover               Child               Friend

I personally do not use every single word listed above and/or in the use described. However, I have personally either used them or heard them being used as such.

What you may also be wondering is if these can be used for every gender. Again, that also depends on the person. However, for the sake of being somewhat general and based on what I myself hear, most of these pet names are used by women or towards women. But, what do men call their male friends and/or boys?
